If we look at the environmental impact of the combination of natural biodegradable materials and hand loom weaving the low carbon footprint due to meagre usage of fossil fuels is a natural solution to our present ecological crisis. Considering that roughly 20 million people are engaged for handloom and related activities in India the impact of hand weaving is huge without doubt not only in terms of cutting down CO2 emissions but the social impact as well.
The traditional knowledge for handloom weaving and related activities, whether its creating the simple tools at each and every level , the skills of the artisan and his family engaged are used at every stage with absolute ease. The cost expenditure incurred for handloom weaving and the requisite infrastructure is minimal compared to a mechanized weaving setting.
Handweaving and hand spinning generates ample employment opportunities for artisans at the village level and this is a very pertinent for the sustenance of village economy. The losing of traditional knowledge and skills has resulted in trans migration to the urban pockets. Instead of practicing their skill sets in their own environment- their homes and their villages, they are compelled to live in shanties of the big cities and engage in menial jobs. They loose touch with their roots, the comfort of their cultural environment and the respect that they get practicing the job they know best.
Next time you buy hand woven cloth you would know the value of the cloth is beyond its tangible qualities. The cloth has a journey and you become a part of that by your awareness and the subsequent choices that you make.
]]>Nasrin Bano, khadi weaver located in a small weaver’s cluster just 20 km from Nagpur. I called her up merely 15 mins before I landed at her doorstep. Completely unknown to each other we still connected. She came to receive me at the main road and guided me to her beautifully indigo painted mud house. She proudly said, all homes here have been concretized, but ours is a mud house. The temperature outside was a good OMG 46 degrees. As soon I entered her home, with a low ceiling height the summer seemed to have banished.
I soaked in the surroundings, made mental notes. Who is enagaged in what activity ? What are they thinking? Will they let me peep in to delve deeper into their lives. I can get so intrusive. Yes, after the formal introductions, we sit beside the pit loom in the right side of the entry way. Her kids still asleep on the other end blissfully unaware of the little commotion we were creating. She proudly demonstrates her weaving skills. She starts speaking about the craft, the yarn, and the process and then as if just waiting to be asked, the very question we would all like to hear, ‘What do you want? What help do you need?’ She opened up to the problems she faces, the fact that nobody bothers to ask, the low wages and that people are all leaving the craft as it gives them nothing and their problems are not addressed.
The conversation leads to chai and glucose biskut time. I was surrounded by lots of smiles, an old woman’s toothy smile, a toddler’s naughty smile and Nasrin’s determined smile.
Part two, back to my city. Not waiting for anybody to ask, ‘ What help do you need?’ But, the fact is I would need a lot of different minds to help me help Nasrin Bano.

]]>A small batch of 50 metres is what I asked him to do, but in natural dyes and not synthetic dyes. The complexity of the process increases and therefore the time, effort and cost proportionately. That was his first batch of Batik in natural dyes. It turned out to be beautiful. He then got a bigger order from an NGO Khamir and from the onwards he regained his confidence about getting back to natural dyeing which his family had stopped. His experiments with the recipes, fabrics and textures make him a craft innovator.
This wax resist technique has been around for the past 2000 years and yet couldn’t survive industrialization and competition. From an entire township of Khatris to just 4 families in Mundra practicing the craft, this dyeing craft is actually in need of not just patrons but intervention to bring back people to learn the craft and earn a respectable livelihood from it. On one hand it’s more popular cousin Ajrakh has grown from strength to strength, Batik is now a diminishing craft.
“People are opting to do menial jobs at the port and other industries that have cropped up around the town instead of learning the skill because it involves skill development and patience both. Every now and then we fall short of man power. The water table has also decreased due to adjoining industries. Batik and natural dyeing are water intensive, but they do not pollute the water. “says Shakil bhai.
Some help by a NGO is on the way and more is definitely needed. This definitely needs to get the spotlight to keep it alive.

More about each craft in forthcoming posts. For now the quaint lanes, ruminating cows and old carved wooden doorways of homes is what I take away for some much needed quiet. The wonder of slow living, contentment and restful life is what I take with me.
]]>This post is specifically written to address this doubt. Every query and every customer input is precious and necessary to answer.
Khadi is distinct; every bit of the cloth is filled with character and human ness. When a yarn is hand spun there is the intimacy and warmth of the spinner with the process. They do it instinctively. The skill is deep set in their being, the movement of the hand, the turning of the wrist mastered without any grand acknowledgement. What you get is the ‘yarn’ wrought with perfect imperfection just like the human who made it.
The yarn changes hands, sometimes dyed, sized with starch wound in bobbins and now presented to the weaver to create the cloth that is an explicit expression of the hands involved in the entire process.
The rhythmic beats of the shuttles trajectory, the instinctive movement of the weaver’s feet on peddles in the pit, the rise and fall of the warp, all come together to create the cloth which we call ‘Khadi’.
Now, coming back to our customer’s doubt, the thickness of the cloth is determined by the count of the cotton yarn. The higher the count, finer is the yarn. The other factor is also the grams/ meter of the woven cloth. The more the weight/ meter, heavier is the cloth. Therefore ‘Khadi’ like any other cloth, it’s thickness is determined with these factors. So, there will be varied range of khadi cloth from heavy to light used for different needs.
Khadi is a representation of the cumulative skills and efforts of artisans. Combine this with the efforts of farmers who grow the cotton and what you get is nothing short of human emotions in a tangible form.
Khadi gets its due when the wearer drapes it and becomes part of this journey. Every wash makes it softer and stronger. Every time you wear it, you stand for all those humans and their emotions.
Have you joined the movement yet? Wear Khadi.

The room is their work space bereft of furniture, well lit, all windows decorated by 'Torans' made by the women of the household and of course bells all around of different sizes. The tools needed are all placed on the wall, all of different sizes too for different bells. What caught my attention is how the tools were perched on holders made by the artisan cleverly devising products to organize their tools.
